I WAS dismayed to learn that Poole council is trying to save money by closing even more toilets so I wish to pass a motion by suggesting alternative measures.

I was at Branksome Dene Chine recently and discovered the Gents’ loo closed and a sign saying unisex facilities were available at the Ladies during the winter which was a great relief.

If it is okay for this arrangement during the winter, surely it is also acceptable for the rest of the year?

This would enable the council to demolish 50 per cent of the loos with no reduction in the facilities available to all and sundry and a further saving could be made by utilising the rubble from the demolished blocks to fill in the myriad of potholes which currently riddle our roads.

I feel certain that most residents would be willing to pay 50p for facilities with suitable inducements for “regulars” such as roses round the door, a welcome mat at the entrance and chamber music being piped to every nook and cranny via flush fitting speakers invoking visions of somebody tinkling away on a piano.

Loyalty cards could be introduced whereby every 10th visit could be free and a monthly prize draw would be an added attraction with very modest prizes such as air fresheners embossed with the Poole Coat of Arms and dual purpose toilet ducks which children could also float on The Bourne Stream.

The council could obtain up-front finance for these enhancements by flogging loo season tickets similar to seasonal car park tickets.

I realise that some pensioners are straining to even spend a penny, let alone a larger amount, but with modern technology it should be a simple task to incorporate a loo pass into the current bus pass.

After all, we already have Pay and Display so why not add Swipe and Wipe?
