I’M probably going to regret writing this letter as no doubt it will result in a lot of personal comments that have nothing to do with the subject in hand. However, I would like to say how strongly I support Bournemouth council on its plans to build on three of the town’s car parks.

Firstly, the council has a duty to maximise assets and in the current financial situation this is particularly important.

Secondly, car parks take up a great deal of space, are scruffy and untidy and do nothing to enhance the look of the town.

Thirdly, however many car parking spaces are on offer people will want more so wouldn’t it be better all round to have a very large car parking area outside of the town and offer park and ride facilities?

This would be just as convenient and easy as parking in the centre of town except that drivers wouldn’t have to spend ages circling round looking for a spot.

Lastly, development of the sites in question would add to the facilities in the town.

I agree this would need to be carefully thought out and would very likely cause a lot of controversy but, speaking for myself, I was very much against the new development on the old bus station site and really thought it would be an eyesore - however (and it pains me to say so) now it’s complete I actually quite like it and it goes well with the new look in the immediate area.

It’s a sad testament to modern life that our main priority in a town centre is car parking.
