So Cllr Filer tells us how his household of two people will manage to fill their rubbish bin when the fortnightly collections start. How lovely for him.

What about households of more than two? Four? Or even six as ours is?

We use recycling, the food waste containers and even have a food disposal unit in our sink and still currently struggle to get all our other rubbish in the weekly collection.

Often we have to blag some space in our retired neighbours’ bin. That will go out the window come April.

Why not offer households the ability to pay for more or larger bins to more fairly spread the cost of disposal as we have with the green bins?

What incentive is there for manufacturers to change their packaging as he so naively thinks?

This will all fall on householders and will result in fly-tipping, insanitary conditions and a huge increase in inefficient, polluting, congesting and time-consuming tip runs.

Soon the Tory council mantra of “we’re not going to increase council tax” will ring hollow!

We’re supposed to be living in a civilised First World country - not a Victorian slum!
