AT THE heart of the proposed reorganisation of local government in Dorset is the need to form separate unitary authorities for the urban and rural areas, with one unitary authority for our south-east conurbation and another for the rest of Dorset, because the urban and rural parts have many differing needs and priorities.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole together form the heart of this conurbation and as we have so much in common it is odd that some Christchurch residents have seemed reluctant to join forces with their urban neighbours. Of course we must each preserve our local history and traditions, just as Torquay, Paignton and Brixham have done within their long-established Torbay unitary authority.

Like the Three Musketeers of old – each for one and one for all – we will be very much stronger together.

Let us recognise all that we have in common while each preserving and celebrating our own very distinctive personality.
