I ENJOYED Darren Slade’s article featuring Churchill Retirement’s chief Spencer McCartney and would not challenge his assertion that nationally there is a pressing need for more sheltered housing.

However, it is clearly desirable that such provision is not concentrated in areas such as Highcliffe, a ward which already boasts the oldest median age of residents in the country.

More than 300 residents recently opposed plans for a monolithic 48-flat development by Churchill in Stuart Road, but the council’s planning refusal was however overturned on inquiry.

The council is making many attempts to ‘rejuvenate’ Highcliffe, having proposed a ‘South Shore Bike Park’ and a ‘Beach Hut Competition’ in the last few years, both meeting strong opposition from residents.

Perhaps a more effective way to re-introduce some dynamism to the area would be to prevent any more housing for the elderly being approved locally?

This can however only be achieved if the next issue of the Local Plan recognises the need for a more healthy demographic, and it is to be hoped that those responsible will take the appropriate action before it is too late.
