YOUR correspondent Mrs Sponslee (Echo Letters, July 22) is quite rightly concerned about keeping the town clean during the busiest months of the year.
The council is committed to making Bournemouth as attractive as possible at all times, and especially when hot weather attracts the crowds in the summer.
This does bring a significant litter problem, especially in the busiest areas of the seafront.
Visitors are encouraged to make use of over 200 bins along the promenade.
However, a significant minority just don’t care and have no respect for their environment. They obviously find it acceptable to just leave their mess for the council staff to clean up.
Bournemouth has a superb and hard-working team of litter pickers who deal with the clean up and maintain very high standards, despite the increasing amount of rubbish left on the beaches and in the gardens.
By the next morning the beaches and gardens are immaculate again, at no small cost to council taxpayers and so the process starts afresh.
I for one would ask all beach users, be they residents or visitors, to be respectful of Bournemouth’s beautiful seafront and gardens and ensure they clean up their own mess, leaving the place tidy for the enjoyment of everyone.

Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisure & the Arts, Bournemouth council
