IN RESPONSE to the article in Saturday’s Daily Echo regarding the shared space area in Boscombe, I would like to register my extreme disappointment at the lack of local support for the regeneration scheme.

We have carried out a survey recently which shows that many residents appreciate the improvements made and are feeling safer and more positive generally about Boscombe.

Also, I have had people say to me how much more welcoming the precinct looks since the changes took place. Despite this, and despite the huge amount of money and time invested in turning Boscombe around to reduce inequality of opportunity and life chances, there are still those who denigrate our work, who accuse us of being unprofessional, inept and incompetent.

Boscombe regeneration is one of the council’s top priorities, our officers are skilled, dedicated and innovative while also taking the utmost care to ensure that safety is a priority.

Funding is sought from external sources to enable work to take place when financial savings are having to be made right across the council, and it pains me to read of our achievements being so belittled.

Work is going on to improve the economy and the health of residents, reduce crime, raise the aspirations of our young people and bring arts and culture to broaden the leisure offer.

The new bollards are placed so that the road is wider than a normal carriageway; traffic, even two buses, can pass with ease, as long as care is taken, and cars are not parked on the corner.

This is basic, safe, considerate driving.

One bollard has been defaced and one knocked over and damaged.

We have repaired and replaced.

We are passionate about Boscombe and will not be discouraged.

COUNCILLOR JANE KELLY

Boscombe West ward, cabinet member for regeneration and public health
