BOURNEMOUTH’S proud boast at aiming for ever higher recycling targets and achieving ‘green’ objectives are made a mockery by recent – and unpublicised – developments.
1. The council tip at Millhams is now no longer open until 7pm, but closes at 5pm (nobody having been informed of this sudden change), and the whole operation has been taken over by Poole Waste Services. Why?
The recycling ‘shop’ which also served a useful purpose has disappeared, and the result of all this may be to increase the resort to fly-tipping – thus creating more expense in the long run.
2. Recycling facilities at Castlepoint Shopping Centre (for bottles/aluminium foil, textiles) have also been removed without warning, leaving only the Dorset Air Ambulance bank there. Where are alternative facilities being provided?
What I should like to know is when was there any public discussion or consultation about any of this, and how much does Bournemouth council expect to "save"?
Why, if we pay our council tax to Bournemouth, are they passing our recycling responsibilities to another borough with a much reduced service?
