FURTHER to the last missive by Mike Fry regarding bullfighting, he might like to know that the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to stop subsidies going to Spanish farmers to raise bulls for fighting.
Because of it being wrapped up with real farmers raising bulls for beef, including in this country, the Council of Ministers deferred a decision until the legal requirements are in place to untangle the legislation.
This is about certain farmers in Spain taking advantage of a situation whereby, they say they are raising bulls for beef and so get the subsidy.
Don’t forget our farmers get this subsidy and if we left the EU this would be on the line.
Animal welfare is an important part of the work that the EU does within the Common Agricultural Policy and the people on the ground are making sterling efforts to protect farm animals from maltreatment across member states. Yes, the UK is at the forefront of this work and so sets an example.
But blaming the EU for all the ills that befall bulls in Spain is a little misplaced.
How about a boycott of our Spanish holidays instead?
