WITH regard to recent comments in the Echo on crossing points in Ashley Road, as a frequent pedestrian user in my 70s and slowing down I am myself worried.

The new beige-coloured crossings might be an improvement, but the point is no-one seems sure who is supposed to give way to who.

And worse, these crossings are already getting dirty and generally fading into the road.

The one at Jubilee Road entrance is too narrow, and that means it is more difficult for motorists to see on a busy corner. And there is very poor visibility to see what is coming when you are crossing the one opposite the post office.

It really is hard at some of these junctions to try and look around in three directions to see if you are safe. Light-controlled crossings and the well-proven wide zebra crossings are clearly the safest.

For instance the main central light-controlled crossing, opposite the greengrocer’s, is very good indeed.

But as we do not have light controls at all crossing points I would urge the council to widen and make clearer all crossings and bring in 20mph along the whole central road.
