LAST Thursday’s Echo prompts the question as to what kind of society we are becoming.
Firstly, we read that a governor of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital has resigned in protest at the way the governors of the hospital intend to deal with the issues and public disquiet raised by the reappointment of a former consultant on a salary of £152,000 per annum. When the consultant had quite recently retired with a £1.9million pension fund, which included a lump sum of £325,000.
Then we read of the squabble raised by the report on tipping and the way in which staff can be financially penalised.
No one in his or her right mind would suggest a consultant should be paid the rate of pay as say a restaurant worker or even the same pay as a GP, but a hospital would not function without cleaners, nurses and all the other back-up staff that contribute towards running a successful hospital.
That fundamental point seems to be overlooked.
