CYCLING in Christchurch is extremely unsafe and has one of the highest levels of cyclist/pedestrian accident records in Dorset.

  • Fairmile cycle lanes consist of completely worn out 'on road' markings on a road that are way too narrow to be safe.
  • Barrack Road has a number of unfinished and unconnected schemes that are not fit for purpose.
  • There are numerous unprotected junctions.
  • We have shared use on one narrow footpath over Barrack Road bridge with two-way pedestrian traffic colliding next to a dual carriageway with no barrier protection from speeding traffic.
  • The dual carriageway is an encouragement for speeding, there’s no traffic calming and no speed limit signs, which is shocking when it is right next to a school.

Christchurch council had approximately one-third of a £12.1m budget to spend on sustainable transport as part of the three towns plan but have rejected proposals for improvements to the cycle lanes and wasted the money on electronic car park signs.

Christchurch is an ideal place for cycle-ways because it is a flat town and everything is within 5km.

However, the roads are clogged up with cars as the cycling alternative is too dangerous for young children.

The issue appears despite the compelling evidence saying that sustainable transport is key to reducing congestion, pollution and personal fitness, there’s no political will in Christchurch council to install proper cycle paths, despite having a share of £12m to spend.
