WHY all this blinkered thinking and obsession with airports ‘having’ to be next to London?
Just to the north of Oxford lies the redundant airfield of Upper Heyford, just off the M40, right next the London-Birmingham main rail line and close to the proposed route of HS2.
It has a 10,000 ft runway that was used by big USAF aircraft. The basis of a new airport is already there.
We need to get those closeted within the M25 to realise there is more to this country than just London.
A new airport out by the Home Counties would do both things of serving the capital and providing a valuable service for those travelling to/from other areas of England.
