IN response to Mr Cooper’s letter of May 22, I would like to stress that Bournemouth Borough Council and I are aware of the deep rooted issues in Boscombe. We are now, after identifying the areas of concern and public consultation, taking action.

We are working with our local MP Tobias Ellwood, to change legislation to deal with the number and quality of the premises that offer supported accommodation.

We are purchasing run down HMO’s and after a total refurbishment are housing from our council housing waiting list.

We have de-cluttered the precinct to give it a more up-to-date and cared-for look and we are working very closely with the police to deal with areas of antisocial and criminal behaviour whilst enlisting the support of the public to give the police the intelligence that they need in order to take appropriate action.

All this in tandem with much work to improve the health and wellbeing of Boscombe residents in other areas of life.

The pressure on BT for removal of the phone boxes is an example of partnership working towards a common goal.

Perhaps Mr Cooper is tolerant of drug dealing and prostitution in full view of families and would have us talk some more. I prefer direct action.

Cllr Chris Wakefield
