WITH reference to the pictures in the Echo (14/5/15), I would ask how many of the drivers pictured would be mortified if they were in an accident which resulted in a fatality due to their use of a mobile phone at the wheel? Probably all of them.
How many would be worried in losing their licence if that was the outcome of being caught using their mobile at the wheel? Probably most of them.
How many are worried at being caught in the first place? None of them!
Therein lies the problem – they see the minimal risk of being caught is worth taking that risk.
The other problem is that with the law as it is, using a mobile phone at the wheel seems to be considered a lesser crime than drink-driving, so the practise will continue.
My suggestion to the government/transport authorities/police would be to get serious and do something about this issue if you think it’s a problem, raise the penalty to immediate disqualification.
Driving on the mobile phone has been proven to be dangerous.
If losing your licence and possibly livelihood could be the result, more would think twice maybe?
