I AM writing in response to ‘Too many roadworks’ published on 20 March.

The council won a government competitive tender to improve roads generally in the town. This programme has enabled the council to carry out works which will benefit all road users, but clearly roads cannot be completed without some disruption to motorists. Within a month most of these works are due to be finished, and once complete there will be a wonderful improvement to the town’s roads in general.

The council is committed to maintaining the roads at the high standard expected by residents, visitors and businesses. In 2014/2015 an additional £753,000 was spent repairing our town’s roads through the ongoing Road Rescue programme and government grants for potholes. The council works to repair potholes as soon possible after they are reported, and between 2012 and 2014 a total of 6,440 potholes was repaired in the town. It is vital that residents continue to report potholes so that they can be fixed quickly.

Keeping everyone on Bournemouth’s roads safe is a top priority and we are working closely with Dorset County Council to make the A338 Bournemouth /Ringwood Spur road safer. Improvements to reduce delays and increase safety between Ashley Heath Roundabout and Blackwater Junction are due to get underway in September 2015.
