SEVERAL years ago I wrote to these pages expressing the sad and sorry state that the Bournemouth Pavilion was looking, especially its interior. A recent visit endorsed the fact that nothing has sadly changed.

With millions of pounds of tax payers’ money wasted on the surf reef and Imax surely there should be vigilance and forward planning for the interior of the Pavilion to be appropriately looked after and painted. As it is at the moment the auditorium, especially the stunning ceiling, needs a good make over. The Pavilion is a most stunning building with period architecture but it continues to be neglected.

The Pavilion performances attract thousands of residents and visitors from far and wide. It is a jewel of Bournemouth and deserves better. With thousands of people flocking there surely it would make sense to incorporate a new visitor centre within the building.

The new pier approach development is costing millions of pounds to create a state of the art visitor centre and extension to the aquarium for penguins. On a wet windy day one hopes that the cost merits the number of users. Obviously there are reasons why the new visitor centre is being located there but in the meantime one would hope that funds are set aside to give due care and attention to the heritage of such a fine building as the Pavilion and the thousands of people who flock there.
