HAVING seen in the Echo a debate about the proposed Navitus Windfarm, I went along to listen to the debate hosted by Dorset Humanists.
I heard strong arguments in favour of the farm, which will provide safe, home-grown electricity for 710,000 homes. It may even boost tourism.
Two gentlemen from the P&CBA (opposing the project) then spoke, and their views would be laughable were they not so dangerous, irresponsible and contrary to accepted science. Climate change, they stated, is not man-made, and their proposed solution for the impending energy crisis? “Large scale fracking”.
Both sides accept the need for us to move away from our current fossil-fuel dependency in a way that guarantees the security of our future energy needs. The government has already decided the technology works; the only question is ‘where to build first?’ Bickering about ‘will it be pretty?’misses the bigger picture: whatever option you favour, sacrifices will have to be made.
Navitus will be local, secure, and necessary – a great step forward, so let’s start building, and quickly.
I’ll leave the last word to my 10-year-old: ‘they will look like giant flowers, what’s not to like about that?’.
