REGARDING your article in Wednesday’s Echo (February, 18) ‘Twitter storm over benefits comments’.

I’m very concerned if councillors are taking the attitude they are the voice against people on benefits.

People on benefits do not cover any particular class of people or needs.

It has been established some people found on benefits should not have been claiming those benefits.

Let’s leave it at that, for the benefit offices to establish who should or should not claim benefits.

The public have different living styles – young and older people and in this climate of shortage of jobs those trying to get a job must be trying to obtain a job closer to the one they had or wish to have and who can blame them, if they are looking for a job suitable to the skills they have.

As a manufacturing manager I was unemployed and I found it difficult to get a manager’s position.

I worked at any job till I obtained a position as a manager.

At that time there were managers staying unemployed for over a year stating in the press they would not work at just any job and were prepared to wait unemployed till they obtained a manager’s position.

Were they any better than those looking for work?

I say those managers were wrong, but did they have the right to claim benefits?

This was highlighted in the press at the time.

So please look at the facts before putting everyone in the same category because they are unemployed.

As for giving vouchers in place of cash I say this is a road to humiliation when what is needed is help and understanding.
