THERE is some discussion in the news about the price of milk and the precarious state of dairy farming in Britain.

It is important that we think about the type of food we eat. Many of us want local or British food that we know is farmed in a safe and healthy way. With milk many of us want British milk.

I would be very prepared to pay another 20 pence a litre for my milk so long as that extra price went directly to farmers.

Compared to a pint of beer, milk is excellent value even at 20 pence more. The Government may need to step in to set a minimum price paid to farmers.

If a supermarket attempts to make milk a loss leader then the supermarket not the farmer should bear that loss.

Otherwise those greedy developers may rejoice at farmers going out of business and us having to drink imported milk.

It’s our choice to make clear to Government that strong action must be taken to protect our milk for the hundred uses from porridge to a cup of tea.
