I feel I must respond to Geoff Cooper’s latest attempt to run down the part of our town which I am lucky enough to represent (Letters 15 January).

It is true that Horseshoe Common has not always had the best of reputations.

But in contrast to Mr Cooper’s “solution” of constant whining and sniping, Bournemouth council decided to do something about it.

Where last year there was a roundabout surrounded by boring pavements and ugly railings, which forced everyone into overcrowded flashpoints, visitors – day and night – are now greeted by an attractive open location with interesting seating and what feels like the entrance to a proper park.

As for the council’s bold move to bring life to the area other than bars and clubs, yes – we did invest council taxpayers’ money in building 64 desirable flats in the new Citrus Building.

Maybe if, as looks likely, the council not only achieves its aim to improve the area but also turns a tidy profit to help keep our council tax down, Mr Cooper will be the first one writing to the Echo to congratulate those responsible.

Unfortunately experience suggests he won’t prove quite that gracious.
