I AM writing in response to ‘Cycle lane is confusing’ published on November 19.

The improvements at Castle Lane West are part of a town-wide initiative to improve sustainable travel options across the town. As the population grows there will be more people travelling in and around the town.

Approximately 30,000 cars a day travel along Castle Lane West and with many of these journeys being of a relatively short distance we must provide improved facilities to make it easier and safer for people to cycle, walk and take the bus.

By carrying out these works we can ensure we have a transport network fit for the future. We appreciate this is a busy route and we are doing all we can to keep disruption to a minimum whilst we carry out the works. As part of phase one a number of changes were made to the junction of East Way with Castle Lane West, including a new road layout, separated signal controls for right turns, and a new separate signal-controlled cycle bypass.

The signals for cyclists have been positioned to reduce their visibility and confusion for motorists.

There are also signs in place to make drivers aware of the new road layout as they approach the junction. I appreciate there may be a settling in period as road users adjust to the new layout and we will continue to monitor traffic flow around the junction.
