SO NIGEL Farage thinks the Armistice agreed on November 11th 1918 was a mistake and that a few more thousand deaths would have prevented the rise of Hitler and avoided the outbreak of the second world war in 1939 – easily said from the comfort of a lecture in 2014!

The reality is that by November 11th 1914, yes, 1914, not 1918 – the premise on which the powers of Europe went to war was that it would be a quick war over by Christmas was fundamentally flawed with Gallipoli, The Somme, the Russian Revolution were all just around the corner.

The next four years would see the youth of Europe destroying itself.

The mistake made when the war fighting ended in 1918 was not to call a halt to the slaughter but to punish the German people, with the former German Kaiser safely settled in Holland.

Shortly we’ll see re-enactments of the football matches between British and German troops played on Christmas Day in 1914 – perhaps Mr Farage could volunteer as a referee and better understand that the kind of nationalism he preaches should have no place in modern international relations
