YOUR correspondent Martin Huse (Light Bulbs are confusing, October 30) need not worry about ‘Heavy Duty’ bulbs being unsuitable for domestic use.

These bulbs have hardier filaments that are designed to take knocks so can be used on building sites and in portable lighting equipment.

It is perfectly acceptable to use them in domestic fittings.

They will not consume more power than a similarly rated bulb nor generate more heat.

The recent legislation outlawing ‘standard’ light bulbs in favour of more efficient halogen and LED types means you cannot buy a simple 100w or 60w as we used to.

However the law permits the selling of ‘heavy duty’ bulbs of this type.

It is a loophole that allows you to purchase this type of bulb instead of spending 3-4 times as much on a halogen equivalent.
