I WRITE in response to the letter ‘Traffic system is not working’.
As Bournemouth’s population continues to grow, we are preparing for a future with more people, more jobs and more people travelling around the town. Bournemouth Borough Council successfully won additional government funding to invest in sustainable transport facilities, so we can make travel across the town easier, safer and more attractive. Significant improvements are underway at Horseshoe Common, Boscombe, Richmond Hill and Bournemouth Travel Interchange.
By making these changes now, we can give people better options for how they travel such as walking, cycling or using public transport, which will help reduce congestion in the long-term and enhance the local environment.
Highways maintenance is an issue across the whole of the country. We have, however, responded to the concerns of local residents by putting significant additional funding in recent years towards improving the condition of Bournemouth’s roads through the ‘Road Rescue’ initiative. We have also improved road safety for all users, particularly children and elderly people, by implementing new signalised crossings and traffic calming measures in key locations.
All of these initiatives aim to improve road safety and will help to keep our communities travelling around the town in the future.
COUNCILLOR NICOLA GREENE, Deputy Leader of Bournemouth council
