A REPORT by the Bournemouth Echo on 28th September regarding the housing of 150 asylum seekers in two Bournemouth hotels, quoted local MPs as being concerned that Bournemouth would become a target destination for asylum seekers in the future and that this would be, unhelpfully, the thin end of a wedge for the town.

As part of the Christian community in Bournemouth, we would like to make it clear that we do not agree with such a position.

It is important that asylum seekers are treated with dignity and supported whilst their applications are processed.

Many may have fled horrific circumstances, examples of which are being reported daily in our newspapers.

It is vital that the UK in showing military and political strength in dealing with world conflict situations, should also treat with compassion those people who consequently have had to leave their homelands. A generous sympathy is a core value of our nation and basic to the Christian faith.

When we lose such compassionate humanity, we surrender something significant that distinguishes us from those who are responsible for the circumstances refugees are fleeing. We want to express the opinion that not all the people of Bournemouth have a negative view of asylum seekers which is driven by fear and suspicion.

We would welcome the opportunity to support such people in their time of need.
