Councillors on the transportation advisory Group voted to extend the 20mph zone from the Newtown pilot scheme.

While 20mph or ‘Slow Down’ signs are a good idea near schools, a blanket 20mph zone for town drivers is excessive and expensive.

Most drivers are careful and considerate – it is only a minority who race through some roads without caution.

Local reporting and police with speed guns could solve this.

The Newtown survey was inconclusive and statistics, based on 34 replies before the pilot and 51 after, did not represent an accurate or wide enough public response.

It seems Poole is intent on making the town a 20mph zone.

This would increase petrol consumption, driver frustration and journey time – 10 miles at 20mph would take 10 mins longer than at 30mph.

Many drivers need their vehicles for work within Poole or via town to other places. Business is income for the town.

Councillors, please do not let the recklessness of a few drivers punish the rest of us.
