AS HOLME Lane is suddenly in the news, I must tell you that in 1935/6 my father and uncle were in the habit of taking us on mystery car journeys on a Sunday.
One Sunday reversing up Holme Lane they both jumped out of their vehicles which had just gone through the ford and produced a large fish, which they claimed to have run over. My brother and I suspected a practical joke, and that my uncle, being a fishmonger, had planted the fish.
However, 60 years later I was sitting by that shallow ford taking a rest and saw a large fish half out of the water making steady progress up the stream. I had no camera but it was a very impressive sight and Holme Lane has been magic territory ever since.
