FURTHER to the report (Echo August 21), Poole level crossing on closing hitting an 80 year old lady twice, this confirms my conviction when they upgraded it in February/March this year that the observation cameras are not working as well as the previous system. This happened to my wife and myself (Echo June 5) when the barrier hit our umbrellas (could have been our head).

Over the past 20 years my wife and I have used this crossing at least five times a week and until this upgrade we have never seen anyone caught inside. It previously never came past half way, picked up anyone inside, stopped, went up until it was clear than came down again.

The spokesman for Network Rail should make sure no one gets hit with the barrier be they old, blind, deaf or just plain stupid, admit the old observation cameras were better than the new and change them before someone is seriously hurt.

Or better still build a better bridge, this one was built in 1872, my first letter in the Echo on the subject was October 28, 1998. Still waiting! If councillors used this crossing in their cars to get to work they would have had the railways move the station.
