I refer to Diana Henderson’s report on the recent discussions on the need to overcome the dangers and inconvenience of the railway crossing in the High Street.

In 2009 similar discussions took place about the need for a bridge and to my knowledge no progress has been made.

At that time I suggested that a two way travelator over the railway line would be preferable to a bridge, so that prams, disability vehicles and the elderly could easily be transferred from one side to the other.

Separate passage each way is needed to avoid the head to head congestion.

Also it would be an attraction for the town, and children would love it!

The external design could blend in with the town, or be modern, covered with a glass roof.

A more adventurous project would be to use the upside of the travelator, not just to cross the railway line, but as the entrance to a new raised shopping centre, with a walk through and the down side of the travelator at the other end. Delivery access could be beneath it, from the Sainsbury area. Maybe the developer could finance the travelator?
