IT takes an incredibly brave community company to mount any kind of theatrical production in this day and age.

Recently at the Pavilion Theatre, a company formed 60 years ago by the late Arthur Ball, then named with the rather long title of Bournemouth and Boscombe Light Opera Company, were still shining.

Their latest production of Sister Act was a credit to everyone involved.

This company has remained true to the spirit that Arthur Ball had the temerity to create; to entertain and to hopefully along the way give money to charity. Over the years production costs have risen so dramatically that many community productions can no longer dare to take their show into the Pavilion Theatre.

BBLOC have suffered losses of the years and not been able to mount such a large scale show every year but they managed after 60 years to continue to shine a beacon for community theatre that is likely to see them reach a centenary performance.

I am sure the founder of the company would have been enormously proud of their achievement, which on the night I attended, had the audience on their feet cheering to the rafters.

The “nuns” had been involved in all sorts of publicity over the past months and it was rewarded hopefully with enough “bums on seats” to carry the company forward to continue to produce top quality community theatre. A night to remember and congratulations to the talented and dedicated company.
