In reply to Joak K Fawkes letter ‘Pothole Woe for Scooters’ (16 July), I feel somewhat with him. We in Britain should be so ashamed about the condition of our pavements. Not just potholes, but badly laid bodged-up surfaces from past energy companies with the worst offender being cable TV.

Like Joak, I never realised before just how bad our pavements are until I also purchased a mobility scooter. I lived in Hamburg, Germany for 10 years and they have got it perfect for all users including cyclists.

As a scooter rider, there are far too many badly-repaired surfaces.

Pavements that actually camber so greatly one has to fear tipping off into the road. Kerb drops being badly installed, causing ‘wheelies’ where one would feel much safer driving on to the main road to pick up a much safer place to get back on the pavement.

Worst of all, vehicles that park on the full pavement allowing no access to any pedestrians, let alone mobility scooters or mothers with prams. All forced to go around on the main road. Such an offence should warrant three points if not a ban for complete selfishness.
