I WONDER whether your correspondents who say all cyclists should stick to the road and not ride on pavements would be happy for their children/grandchildren to be riding in the road. I certainly wouldn’t.

A compromise is needed and I would suggest that children up to the age of say 14 be allowed to ride on the pavements whilst those 15 and over must ride on the road, or better still all pavements, where practicable, should be divided by a white line with pedestrians on one side and cyclists on the other.

This is in no way to excuse the loutish behaviour of those who injured the pedestrian. Behaviour of this sort should be cracked down upon hard.
