May I ask Cllr Michael Filer where are all the cyclists? (‘Our concern is cyclists’ safety’, Monday’s Echo, letters page) I use this Richmond Hill route many times each week, often several times a day, but seldom do I see any cyclists, either in the newly designated cycle lane or anywhere else for that matter.

As for the Wimborne Road approach, it really does seem as though the traffic department at the Town Hall has taken leave of its senses.

Prior to the ‘improvements’ there were two approach lanes, which became three at the actual roundabout.

Within seconds it was possible to cross the bridge into the car park or Richmond Hill itself.

No hold-ups, no difficulties, just comfortably flowing traffic.

Since the many weeks of disruption and some £250,000 we are now left with two lanes which are suddenly pinched into one at the cyclists’ lane crossover, and then back to two, but with the left hand lane serving only traffic turning left onto the A338 eastbound towards the station at the roundabout.

The remaining lane (formerly two lanes) is now expected to serve traffic with no less than three destinations – Richmond Gardens Car Park, Richmond Hill, and the A338 westbound. Result?

Queues of cars now stretch back to the traffic lights at St.Valerie Road at peak times, and on the bridge itself new traffic lights hold up a maximum of just eight vehicles before the dreaded yellow box prevents more joining the queue.
