I AM delighted that Mike Roberts Butler, having attended a wedding at Upton House on a recent visit, approves (Letters, September 11).

He may well wonder how this is achieved with a cash-strapped council, and he may be surprised when I say it is down to a local charity, the Friends of Upton Country Park, who have over the last 30-plus years raised over £600,000 through the generous support of the public at our activities, from the ice cream kiosk to the plant centre.

Whether it is tractors, flora and fauna in the country park, or chandeliers, decor, drapes, carpeting, spiral staircase upgrading, French polishing, is all down to donations that we give to our partners, Poole Borough Council.

Further I am extremely pleased he approves of our latest restoration, the work being done in the library, something that is not easy with such delicate and loving care required to achieve the best for all concerned.

A careless glass of wine or tea cup misplaced and damage can occur.

To have a wedding in such circumstances is a privilege, and requires careful stewarding.

Why not see areas that you were unable to see, by becoming a member of the friends, as we have but scratched the surface of what can be achieved with more support.

BRIAN J GALPIN, president, Friends of Upton Country Park
