RESEARCH carried out by the Moordown Local History Society has ensured that the sacrifice made by Moordown war heroes will be officially recognised.

Social secretary Jenny Young undertook a thorough investigation of the names listed on the St John’s war memorial and identified more than a dozen that were missing from the town’s official book of remembrance.

She compiled a dossier on each, using information from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the Ancestry website.

Jenny was then invited to the Mayor’s Parlour for a meeting with Mayor Cllr Rod Cooper.

The criteria for the inclusion of names and the personal war stories of the Moordown soldiers were examined in detail.

Subsequently, the Mayor announced that 12 names would definitely be added to the book.

A two further names are being kept under consideration pending further investigation.

Jenny said: “I am delighted.

“Moordown families lost sons, brothers, husbands and fathers.

“Letters survive from family members expressing the hope that their sacrifice would be remembered and now we can ensure that this is done.”
