Funki Sushi, Exeter Road, Bournemouth
AS DORSET is not exactly over endowed with sushi restaurants it is surprising that Funki Sushi is not busier.
We went on a Wednesday which perhaps is not its most popular night - but when I rang in advance to book I got a laugh and was told it was not necessary. This did mean we got a table near the window with views over the Bournemouth gardens.
We peered at the menu for a while. The lighting is so dim and flickery and while it does give the romantic impression of dining under the stars it is a wonder anyone can read any of the small print on the menu.
Even if we could have read it there were so many options we had no idea what to chose so asked for help from the waiter. As well as sushi there were several Malaysian dishes and, for the wary, lots of things that did not involve raw fish.
The attentive waiter seemed to know what he was on about so we took followed his recommendation of the Typhoon rolls (£6.50). We also opted for a spicy Malaysian mixed seafood salad (£9.95) and some salmon and tuna sashimi (£6.75).
When the food arrived it was beautifully presented and we eagerly tackled it with our chopsticks.
My two friends and I shared the three dishes, which were all very tasty. The rolls with tempura prawns, onion, spicy mango and avocado were delicious and the slightly spicy salad was full of seafood. The sashimi, coiled on the plate like flowers, was slippery, meaty and very good.
We washed it down with a bottle of Pinot Grigio white wine (£11).
My friends finished the meal off with coffees and I had a white tea - which had a plant swimming in it, bizarrely.
Our total bill was £40.60 for three of us, which I thought was very reasonable for the quality of the food.
The Exeter Road restaurant does all kinds of special offers and is particularly generous to students so it could be worth checking in advance the best day to go. I will definitely be going back.
