Butterfly’s great effect

The American Consul could have warned her - don't trust American sailors, or at least not ones like Lieutenant FB Pinkerton.

But it's the young Madam Butterfly's fate to remain innocently unaware of her lover's true nature right to the tragic end of Puccini's immortal opera.

Ellen Kent's production was a real vocal and visual delight. The Mikado-type costumes and scenery cleverly conjured up a late 19th century Japan that was still largely a very traditional society.

With an exquisite soprano voice Elena Dee's was greatly affecting as the noble born but now orphaned, and living as a geisha hostess, Butterfly. Dee brings out her inner strength in comparison to the older Pinkerton, who after their marriage sails back to America, leaving her to bear their child alone.

Andriy Perfilov is the perfidious Pinkerton, and Petru Racovita plays the Consul who knew it would end badly all along.
