Mor celebrations for Israel at 60

Israel 60, Opera House, Boscombe

I get my free bus pass - and a nation celebrates. The connection, though, is purely coincidental - both the state of Israel and yours truly reach our Biblical three score years together this year.

Marking their own special occasion in style, Bournemouth's Jewish community held a buffet evening in the stunning surroundings of the newly renovated Opera House, addressed by the Mayor Cllr Ann Filer, a Jewish community member herself.

She spoke passionately of her feelings for Israel and hopes for a peaceful future in the region.

The main entertainment of the evening came from the highly acclaimed, beautifully clear voiced singer-songwriter Mor Karbasi.

Jerusalem born but based in London, her songs, both old and new, are based largely on traditional forms - particularly from medieval Spain with the 15th Century laments of Latido of the persecuted Jewish population and the sheer excitement of the Gypsy and Moorish fusion of Flamenco.

Strikingly attractive in her Andalucian style dress, her high heeled foot stomping and hand turning movements were given vibrant backing by her percussion, jazz temp violin and acoustic guitar trio.

The effect was spellbinding.

There was warm applause for the local festive streamers-flowing all-women lively Israeli dance group in support.
