CURTAIN UP: Arlene Phillips, centre, with Flashdance stars Noel Sullivan, Victoria Hamilton-Barritt, Bernie Nolan and Bruno Langley

THE world premiere production of Flashdance - The Musical, based on the Eighties movie, arrives at The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton from August 5.

Taking the lead role of girl welder turned dance sensation Alex Owens is Victoria Hamilton-Barritt, whose West End theatre credits include Mamma Mia!, Fame and Desperately Seeking Susan.

She has also appeared in touring stage productions of Saturday Night Fever and West Side Story.

Choreographer Arlene Phillips says she knew that Victoria was the girl for the role.

"After searching the country high and low and seeing hundreds of girls for the part of Alex, I suddenly remembered the stunning Victoria Hamilton-Barritt who had played a leading role in Saturday Night Fever in the West End and invited her to audition," she said.

"She is the only girl who we believe can sing, act and dance this role to the standard we need."

Meanwhile, Coronation Street actor Bruno Langley will play Jimmy.

Best known as The Street's Todd Grimshaw, Bruno has also appeared in everything from Doctor Who to the movie The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse.

Other leading members of the cast include Bernie Nolan and Noel Sullivan.

Former lead singer of The Nolan Sisters, Bernie Nolan's theatre credits include Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers.

She also played Diane Murray in Brookside for two years and Sergeant Shelagh Murphy in ITV1's The Bill, Noel Sullivan was one fifth of the pop band Hear'say. In the theatre he's played Danny in Grease and Nick in Fame.

Producer David Ian said: "To have put together a star cast of this calibre is beyond my wildest dreams. This show is going to be dynamite."

Set in Pittsburgh, USA, the musical tells the story of how 18-year-old Alex holds on to her dreams against all the odds.

The show, which runs until Saturday, features an iconic score including Maniac, Manhunt, Gloria, I Love Rock and Roll and the Academy Award winning title track Flashdance - What a Feeling.
