Drink and make Murray

Comedian Al Murray, brings his ever-popular Pub Landlord to Bournemouth next year.

Tickets for his show at the BIC's Windsor Hall on March 7, 2009, are on sale now.

His character is an ill-informed Little Englander whose resistance to change and fear of anything foreign may sound like a nightmare, but he's a comic masterpiece.

Not since Johnny Speight created Alf Garnett back in the 1960s has there been a character who articulated with such brilliance the ignorance, prejudice and xenophobia that bubbles so dangerously close to the surface in this country of ours.

We love to laugh at Britain's favourite bar-room philosopher because we instantly recognise his flaws.

The trouble is, of course, we recognise them because there really are people like him.

Somehow, though, Murray delivers his cautionary tale with such a twinkle in the eye, that audiences can't help warming to him.

As one critic memorably, and accurately, put it, Murray's show is "a comic high-wire act" pulled of with "phenomenal comic balance".
