Romance with a Double Bass (12) Liberation ***
NOW here's a cinematic curiosity - John Cleese and Connie Booth in the buff for their first on-screen appearance together a year before Fawlty Towers.
It's an adaptation of a short story by Chekhov in which a bass player and princess are brought together after they go skinny dipping (quite independently of each other) and their clothes are stolen.
Both Cleese and Booth are naked virtually throughout but there's absolutely no sauciness to this short film, which achieves instead a charming, fairytale air of innocence.
It's delightful to see Cleese turn in such a gentle, restrained performance.
