I, Pierre Riviere (15) Tartan **

ON June 3, 1835, Pierre Rivierre, a native of La Faucterie in Normandy, took a billhook to his mother, his sister and his brother. Having killed them, he left the village to live in the woods.

In this 1976 French classic, film-maker Rene Allio used a cast of mainly unknown actors to portray the fateful events.

Pierre Rivierre became a cause celebre due to the journal he wrote after his capture.

Sadly for me the film drags and it hasn't aged well.

There is no tension and not much drama either and what could have been a study of a troubled mind becomes a bore.

Back to Normandy, the 2007 documentary of the film, is much more satisfying.
