30 Days of Night (18) Icon ***

OH, WHAT might have been...

This slick, superior action horror reinvents the vampire movie, has a great concept and is smartly directed.

Its villains are inhuman, feral descendants of Max Schreck's Nosferatu, a world away from the usual effete Dracula clones.

Descending on an isolated Alaskan town where the sun won't be seen again for a month, they are a truly terrifying swarm of insect-like predators.

Unfortunately, the heroes are sketchily drawn at best, making it hard to care who survives, while the supposed 30-day time frame is a confused mess and the "emotional" ending is a bit of a non-event.

There's a lot to like, but it still feels like a missed opportunity.
