The Breeders - Mountain Battles (4AD) **

THIS little Pixie went to market... and sold her musical cow for very dull beans.

With Pixie senior Frank Black (now Black Francis again) off making very average country records, the one constant that Pixies fans could count on was a (routinely delayed) helping of indie scuzz from Kim Deal and her ever-changing background staff.

Her last album, Title TK, hinted at a more downbeat approach but still packed some typical Breeders rawk in Huffer and Son of Three.

Mountain Battles suffers for its lack of such gems, choosing instead some garden variety pop, highly relaxed sunset themes, disjointed strums and a handful of weird, blippy boppy beats that wouldn't look out of place on Aphex Twin's cutting room floor. Really disappointing.
