The Courteeners - St Jude (A&M) ****

THE trouble with being the Next Big Thing is actually delivering the goods and while great hair, a big gob and a frontman called Liam (sound familiar?) gives you a decent head start, young master Fray is more like a one-man Pete 'n' Carl than his home city brethren Noel & Liam, Morris-sey & Marr, or even Brown & Squire. However, this debut outing has much to commend it.

Rather than launch itself in a blaze of glory, the album actually improves as it progresses.

The first stand-out track, Please Don't, invokes the lyrical dexterity of Vini Reilly and Alex Turner; while What Took You So Long? offers a new slant on The Jam and Britpop-era Pulp and Not Nineteen Forever has the potential to move stadia.

St Jude is the patron saint of lost causes - her presence is not yet required.
