The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely (Third Man/XL Recordings) ***

RUSHED to the shops to head off online leaks (and, cynics might say, any dodgy reviews), fans will have had this follow-up to Broken Boy Soldiers blasting for a good couple of weeks by now.

In essence, Consolers of the Lonely holds few surprises.

Sure, there's some mariachi brass here (but nothing as crazy as The White Stripes' Conquest) and a bit of Celtic pipery there (again, more restrained than the Stripes), but it's the same basic blend of monster guitar riffs detonated over crashing drums and Jack White's hi-lo vocal ticks softened by Brendan Benson's more conventional instincts.

The record still manages to cover plenty of ground, though, from 70s prog to jug band blues, fuzzy garage punk and folk rock - sometimes all in the same song. Live with it, you'll learn to like it.
