Athletics: Yewstock top of the tree with best tally at Games
FIVE Special Needs Schools in Dorset came together for a new disabled athletics competition at Kings Park.
More than 60 athletes took part in the England Athletics’ QuadKids competition format as part of the Dorset School Games programme.
“It was truly inspiring to watch a young athlete sprinting with the aid of crutches, another racing in a wheel chair and others overcoming their disabilities to fully engage the competition,” said John Drennan from Active Dorset County Schools Partnership.
Teams of six boys and six girls from each school competed in a track event, a field event and a relay with Yewstock School claiming the top prize.
Assisting on the day to help the final run smoothly were young leaders from Glenmoor School.
“In QuadKids, performances are converted to points so the finishing did not matter, instead the points are accumulated to amass a total team score,” explained Drennan.
The remaining 12 events of the Dorset School Games take place at eight ven-ues in Bournemouth next Friday, coinciding with the arrival of the Olympic torch relay.
Result: 1 Yewstock, 2 Linwood, 3 Wyvern, 4 Beaucroft, 5 Montacute.
