Cricket: Captain Luke's half-century in vain as Dorset lose

SKIPPER Luke Webb hit a half-century but it was in vain as Dorset under-17s suffered a five-wicket defeat at the hands of Wiltshire in an ECB competition at Canford School, Wimborne.

Webb (56) and Freddie Barton (36 not out) contributed to Dorset’s total of 187 for nine off their 50 overs.

In reply, Wiltshire batted steadily and wrapped up victory in the 43rd over.

• Dorset under-15s suffered ECB cup misery when they lost to Cornwall by five wickets at Bryanston School.

Batting first, the hosts were all out for 119 in the 46th over before the Cornish boys secured victory in the 28th over. Richard Witherington (2-21) was the pick of Dorset’s bowlers.

• Dorset under-13s recovered well from a difficult start but failed to bowl well enough to defeat Devon in their ECB County Cup match at Axminster.

Crucially, Dorset were asked to bat on a drying wicket and lost early wickets.

Nevertheless, a remarkable fifth-wicket partnership between Ollie Shrubsole (57), his first full county half-century, and opener Greg Willows (67 not out), who carried his bat, put their side into a promising position at 152 for six.

In reply, Dorset bowled inconsistently.

Unable to keep the home side in check, they were dominated by the Devon opener who scored 61 of his side’s 155 for six to win with two overs to spare.

Pick of the Dorset bowlers was off-spinner Ross Tooley who turned the ball sharply and bowled with commendable accuracy, claiming 3-12 in just eight overs.
