FORMER Bournemouth Dolphin Amelia Maughan was left grinning from ear to ear after helping Team GB claim a 4x100m women’s medley silver at the Youth Olympic Games.

After getting her Nanjing adventure under way on Sunday, Maughan was back in the water just 24 hours later to help Team GB into the 4x100m women’s medley final.

The quartet of Maughan, Jessica Fullalove, Georgina Evans and Charlotte Atkinson comfortably won their heat in a time of 4:09.83.

However, they were only just getting started and shaved more than four seconds off that time to come home in the showpiece in 4:05.75.

That was good enough for silver and 18-year-old Maughan admitted it was nothing less than the team had deserved.

“I am really pleased with the silver medal and it was a great swim from everyone,” said Maughan, who swam the fourth and final leg.

“We all dug really deep and worked hard for this and it was a great effort by everyone. I am really proud of them all.

“It is more than a six-second PB and it is a big improvement on our morning swim which is all you can ask for.

“I am so happy to win the silver medal, not just for myself but for the team.”

Maughan was busy on the second day of action as not only did she climb the podium but also went in the women’s 100m freestyle.

However, she had to settle for a reserve place in today’s final with her time of 55.97 seconds good enough for 10th, with just eight showpiece spots up for grabs.

“While I am happy with my freestyle swim in the semi-final, I am not over the moon,” Maughan added.

“I have been fighting with my legs a little bit since I came here but that was as happy as I have been so far out here at least.”
